Construction firms must provide T Level and apprenticeship opportunities if they are working on school building projects as part of the government’s new education strategy.
The government has said that this will create 13,000 apprenticeship opportunities for young people looking to enter the construction industry. 90% of these opportunities will be within a 30-mile radius of the school being built, ensuring that members of the local community will be the ones to benefit.
This latest move, announced as part of National Apprenticeship Week, supports the Prime Minister’s target to get two thirds of young people into employment, education or training by 2028.
According to Skills Secretary Jacqui Smith: “This government is leading by example, creating incredible opportunities for our young people by championing apprenticeships and T Levels in our school and college building projects.”
Across England, companies will bid for a share of almost £300 million in capital funding, creating more places for 16–19-year-olds and expanding construction training provision, thus addressing skills shortages and supporting economic growth. Research by the Department of Education last year show that apprenticeships contribute £25 billion to England’s economy.
The government has committed to long-term funding through to 2034-2035. Construction firms will be able to plan ahead when it comes to training apprentices as they enter the workforce.
