As part of the strategy addressing local skills shortages in industries such as construction, government proposed pathways would give Year 10 pupils access to vocational training opportunities.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said he wants to transform the education system so that academic and technical qualification are valued equally: “from today, Britain will value the hard hat every bit as much as the graduation cap.”
Schools, colleges, and employers would cooperate to decide which qualifications should be offered based on local labour-market needs, rather than relying on a centralised approach.
Under this new approach, pupils could visit construction sites, and gain practical experience before choosing their next steps at 16.

We often visit London schools and colleges throughout the year, and speak directly to pupils and their parents about the benefits of a career in the construction industry.
