JBT director Denise is quoted in this Construction News article, published earlier in the week, about the ongoing issues in construction skills training.
The UK government’s £625m investment in construction skills training aims to address the industry’s chronic labour shortages, with funding allocated in part to apprenticeships. This funding will potentially “bridge the gap” between educators and employers.
In the article, Denise explains the limitations of current educational opportunities such as bootcamps and training hubs. There is a persistent issue with graduates often lacking the necessary practical skills to work on-site: “We always reach the problem that they have nowhere to go after this; an electrician is not qualified at the end of these courses. On-the-job training and mentorship is where we fall down. [There’s a] lack of employers to take on apprentices.”
